Wisdom Teeth: The Ender’s Game

Thursday, July 14th, 2005

Yesterday I had my wisdom teeth removed. It was prertty easy, actually. My doctor was one Dr. Ronald Copenhaver, a rotund man with fat hands and a sunny disposition.

First they stick this cold slimey thing on my back, to measure my heart. Then they put an IV in the back of my hand, a thing on my finger to measure the oxygen level in my blood and something else. They also put an oxygen tub into my nose.

I remember all this very clearly. Then they injected the sleepy chemicals into the IV. Didn’t feel anything, still awake. I told the Doctor I’d like to know the name of the chemcial, so I could read about it. “I like to read encyclopedias.” He said “You do? I used to read encyclopedias too. You must be a geek”

The next thing I remember the nurse is waking me up. I don’t remember being asleep, though. I asked “It’s done?” and she said “Yep, they’re all gone.” Somehow the thing they placed on my back was gone too. My hand where the IV had a little bandaid on it too.

I get up, and I stagger quite a bit. The nurse lady insists on excourting me to my mother’s car. I remember walking outside the building, leaning on her arm. She must’ve been quite strong. I do not remember getting into my mother’s car. Nor do I remember all the places my mother stopped on the way home. She bought me some Yoohoo’s, gatoraide, and other things that I can get sustinance from without hurting my mouth.

But I don’t remember the drive home at all. I layed on our couch for a minute or two, then I went to my room. Apparently I removed my jeans and got in bed.

Either I napped briefly and then took my laptop to my bed, or did that right around when I removed my jeans. I remember setting the laptop up on my bed, I do. I just don’t remember the removing of the jeans or getting into bed before that, really…

I said a number of odd things to people. I didn’t really say much in sine other than I was back and still alive, but nonetheless added to the topic: “If Dylan seems unusually sane today, it is because he is currently on drugs.” Hardy-har-har.

I told quite a few friends how happy I was to know them, too. I guess sleepy-drugs or the pain killers they gave me after make me a real softy. Well, even more of a softy than normal.

Right now I don’t need any pain meds. They’ve warn off, and the novacane-like numbing agent has too. But I feel fine. That’s good jaw surgery. I highly recommend Ronald Copenhaver to anyone that needs wisdom teeth removed.

Something else rather nice happened, too. But that’s for another entry.

A story

This is the result of some weird reflection I was doing after I woke up this morning.
